Voice communication in the RealTrac system can be carried out in a half duplex mode (communication is one direction at a time, similar to push-to-talk method) or in a full duplex mode. In a full duplex mode a mobile node connects the server (and later, for example, a system manager) according to "point-to-point" communication. Audio streaming in one direction according to G.729 standard operates at a bit rate of 8 kbit/s.
The Asterisk server should support VoIP protocols in order to deploy PBX using SIP within the RealTrac local positioning system.
